No sooner had the words been spoken!
Lin Ye instantly brought forth the cursed talisman and slapped it directly onto the Foreman Zombie’s forehead.
Thud!
The very next second.
The Foreman Zombie had no time to react or comprehend the situation. Its entire body stiffened and toppled straight backward!
But the Red Dragon talisman…
…wasn’t a true mystical seal, after all.
It could only suppress briefly, incapable of delivering a final death blow.
Lin Ye dared not hesitate for a moment.
Using that precious window, he summoned a coffin nail.
Biting his finger, he channeled his vital essence, infusing the nail before driving it into the zombie’s skull!
“Nail your skull!”
One strike, soul banished.
Immediately after.
Lin Ye produced two more nails, driving one into each of the creature’s flailing arms.
“Nail your arms!”
And at that very moment.
The weak magic of the Red Dragon talisman sputtered out.
It began to smolder and burn away on its own.
“Y-you... you’re human! You’re not dead!”
Finally processing events, the Foreman Zombie tried to surge up and pounce on Lin Ye.
Only…
…its arms were pinned fast.
No matter how it struggled, it couldn’t rise!
Lin Ye seized the chance, driving two more nails into its knees.
Now…
…only two coffin nails remained in Lin Ye’s grasp!
One for the navel.
And the last…
“He’s alive! Grab him!”
Though immobilized, the Foreman Zombie’s jaw still worked.
Instantly.
It commanded the other two lesser zombies nearby.
But…
…before the order was fully uttered, Lin Ye’s final nail shot out!
“Shut the hell up!”
The last coffin nail pierced the Foreman Zombie’s perineum.
Seven Yin points gathered.
Instantly.
The snarling, vicious zombie seemed to have all its life force ripped away.
Its skin began to decay rapidly, sloughing off to reveal pallid bone and putrid flesh beneath.
Then.
That rotting flesh started to melt like wax, flowing down in viscous streams.
Within moments, the entire zombie had dissolved into a repulsive pool of pus, utterly unrecognizable.
The two remaining zombie lackeys.
First, they stared at the puddle that was once their leader. Then, their gazes flickered to Lin Ye, whose eyes blazed with ferocity.
Whether cowed by Lin Ye’s glare, or because their leader’s demise had stripped them of purpose…
…the two corpses exchanged a glance.
The next second.
They spun around and fled the graveyard without a backward glance!
Once certain the zombies wouldn’t return…
Thump!
A heavy thud echoed.
Lin Ye could no longer withstand the internal pressure. His legs gave way, and he slumped heavily to the ground.
In that instant.
Every ounce of strength drained from Lin Ye’s body.
The taut cord of his nerves snapped, leaving his form limp and deflated, like a puppet with its strings cut.
“Huff… Huff…”
This was his first direct confrontation with the supernatural.
To say Lin Ye wasn’t tense… would be a complete lie.
He sat sprawled on the ground, gulping in deep, ragged breaths of air.
Simultaneously.
The burial robes he’d changed out of earlier were now soaked through with cold sweat.
Trickles ran down his neck, drenching his back, making the fabric cling clammily to his skin.
A chilling wind gusted.
His back felt icy cold.
Lin Ye couldn’t suppress a violent shiver, which paradoxically brought back a sliver of strength.
Shakily rising, Lin Ye turned his attention to the spoils.
The moment the Foreman Zombie died, the system had automatically generated a treasure chest.
But drawing closer…
…the chest distinctly resembled an urn—an ash container.
Opening it revealed…
…three items laid out within:
[Putrid Flesh]: Material
Grade: Rite
Quantity: 19
Description: This rotting flesh has lost all nutritional value, but can be used to feed certain peculiar creatures!
…
[Corpse Oil]: Material
Grade: Rite
Quantity: 16
Description: Can be used as fuel in a corpse oil lamp or stored in a specialized container.
…
[Bone Fragments]: Material
Grade: Rite
Quantity: 7
Description: Can be ground into Bone Dust Powder, rumored to cure certain illnesses!
…
Three fairly ordinary items.
It wasn’t the explosive haul one might hope for.
But Lin Ye felt no disappointment.
Because…
…he knew.
The true treasure lay within the Foreman Zombie’s own burial mound!
The two lesser zombies had resided in simple shrouds.
Lin Ye had only managed to salvage some straw grass from those.
Thankfully.
The Foreman Zombie had occupied an actual coffin.
Inside, Lin Ye unearthed a pillow, one Corpse-Suppressing Coin, and one hundred and seven copper coins.
[Corpse Pillow]: Furniture
Grade: Rite
Quantity: 1
Description: Seems to only function as a sleeping pillow. No other discernible use.
…
[Copper Coins]: Material
Grade: Rite
Quantity: 107
Description: With these and a single Corpse-Suppressing Coin as the core, they can be synthesized into a Coin Sword!
…
[Corpse-Suppressing Coin]: Material
Grade: Longevity
Quantity: 1
Description: Also called a Death-Clasping Coin. Traditionally placed in the mouth to pacify the corpse, but can also be synthesized into certain magical tools!
…
So that meant…
…using the Corpse-Suppressing Coin as the focal point and combining it with the one hundred and seven copper coins would create a Coin Sword.
However.
As Lin Ye prepared the synthesis, the system prompted him: he still needed a red cord to serve as the binding medium.
Lin Ye had no red cord.
He had no choice but to shelve the plan for now.
Glancing up at the sky…
…he realized how much time had passed. It was now deep into the dead of night.
Time to head back.
‘Maybe once everyone’s awake tomorrow, I can try trading for a red cord,’ Lin Ye thought as he trudged homeward.
Closer.
Almost there.
His own burial mound was just ahead.
But then…
…Lin Ye froze, his blood running cold. Something unnatural had appeared beside his grave mound.
A jar.
Lin Ye was certain.
Nothing had been there when he’d left.
But the jar…
…couldn’t have appeared by itself!
Lin Ye rubbed his eyes hard.
At first…
…he reasoned it was the darkness playing tricks—ghostly delusions messing with his sight.
But he rubbed once, twice.
The jar remained, sitting silently beside his grave mound!
Peering closer…
…it looked eerily familiar!
Hold on!
Wasn't that the jar he'd just made an offering to?!
But that was back in the overgrown weeds!
How could it possibly have moved to his graveside?
Unless…
…it did harbor a female ghost?
“What evil dares show itself? Reveal yourself!” Lin Ye barked, his fist tightening around the Corpse-Suppressing Coin.
It wasn't the complete Coin Sword…
…but a Longevity-grade material should still pack some spectral-purging punch!
“Kind Sir, there’s no need for alarm. It’s only me,” an eerie, feminine voice drifted from within the jar.
Huh?
What?!
“Just who are you?!” Lin Ye was utterly bewildered.
“Kind Sir, I am Wang Xiaocui. You can call me Xiaocui.”
“Xiaocui, why do you call me ‘Kind Sir’?” Lin Ye eased his grip slightly, though his wariness remained strong.
He wouldn’t blindly trust a ghost’s words.
Except…
…when he’d checked his territory information earlier, the population count had automatically increased by one.
Meaning…
…the ghost in the jar was now… his ghost.
