Chapter 108 – The language of love
"I have loved her for a long-time, Dad." 1
Devin could not lie to his father and ended up confessing. Cobby had a little smile in the corner of his lips, remembering how Devin never introduced any woman to him before.
Perhaps his overprotectiveness of his sisters was causing him to lose focus on his life since he was not growing any younger.
"Why haven't you told her?" Cobby asked seriously, Devin lowered his head with a sad smile,
"Because of a personal principle I have, to not date my sister's best friend or anyone close to her."
Cobby found his reason weird and could not support it either. "That must be a very stupid philosophy."
It was not in him to involve himself in his children's relationships but he has learned lessons over the years and was now rich with a lot of experience. What would his role be as a father if he did not impact the experience?
He would only have regrets when his time of death knocks hard on his door. Devin had another reason which he explained,
"In her case, she might even think I'm taking advantage because I helped her."
"But you don't know that for sure right?" Cobby encouraged him but Devin felt that his father did not understand since he had been in love only once.
"Dad, it's not as easy as you think."
"Trust me, son, I know more about love than you do but it's also the reason why the playboys win the heart of the most innocent girls."
Cobby's revelation caught Devin's interest and seemed to have sparked something tangible inside of him. He asked seriously,
"What are you saying?"
"Learn from the playboys but don't be a playboy," Cobby advised, not surprised by the confusion on Devin's face, as well as the question that followed soon after.
"What is there to learn from the likes of Robin and Daniel?"
Cobby smiled faintly, matters of love in his time were quite different from now but he still believed that they spoke the same language, whereas people only understood them differently.
"They are goal getters. When they want something, they just go for it without caring about the consequences. I can tell you for a fact that if you don't take care, your sister might even fall in love with Daniel."
Devin frowned and his eyes darkened. Daniel was just like Robin and he would never allow Lizzy to go through what Sabrina went through.
"I will not allow it."
"Now that is the problem," her father pointed out. Devin was confused once again so Cobby explained it in simple terms again like before.
"You have done a great job at protecting them when they were teenagers but now, you don't have to scare men away from them unless they ask for your help or the man is trying to force themselves on them."
He has watched Devin discourage Lizzy from going out with men and Cobby realized that it soon had an effect on Lizzy, as he lost interest in men.
Her only passion now was her work and Cobby was not happy about it.
Whereas Devin equally had his reason and asked seriously, "Are you not afraid that they would be deceived?"
"Deception is another language of love. It only depends on who is listening to it," Cobby let out and for once, Devin felt that his father was losing his mind with all these parables he kept speaking with.
"You want me to allow Daniel to hit on Lizzy?" Devin asked directly. He preferred practicality to all the rhythms of parables his father was using but Cobby felt that Devin was too old to be fed with milk. He was not going to use simple language and asked again,
"Did you observe your sister's reaction when he was hitting on Matilda?"
Devin frowned and shook his head. His only focus at the moment was the asshole Daniel and getting him away from Matilda before she fell for his deceptive tongue. Women were moved by what they heard and Daniel had the right words to pin a woman under him.
"No, but he tried to hit on Lizzy before, and I stopped him."
Cobby was nodding his head as Devin indirectly revealed the root of what he was thinking to be the problem.
"If he begins to date Matilda, trust me, there will be a conflict between both women because she doesn't even know that she has fallen in love with him."
Devin did not agree with his father this time. For as long as he knew, Lizzy never showed any form of concern or interest in Daniel.
"She said she doesn't even like him."
"But she was attracted by his boldness. Every woman wants a man who is not afraid to announce to the world that they belong to him," Cobby pointed out again.
Devin went into deep thought, understanding what his father was talking about.
Anytime he saw Daniel with another woman, he would flaunt the woman around and make her feel special.
Though he did not have any interest but just to get sex, women would in turn get attached to him. The only good thing about Daniel was the fact that he knew how to draw boundaries and paid them their dues.
"But Daniel would only hurt her if given the chance," Devin expressed his fears once again but Cobby had to disagree one more time.
"And who said he might not be the one getting hurt when he realizes that his heart has been stolen? Son, never fight against nature. Allow it to take its course and step in if only you are needed," he advised and Devin scoffed.
What if it was too late like what happened with Sabrina? Then again, Sabrina did not have the intention to marry Robin before but was forced.
"Dad, if what you are saying is true then do you mean that if Robin wants Sabrina back, you won't have anything against it?" Devin asked seriously.
