C47 Chapter 47

If there was a moment I would efface out of my life forever, it was that night's horrendous incident in the shed to where my father drew me as compensation for his debt. That bastard almost did something terrible to me if only someone in a black hoodie jacket did not slam the door and smacked him down. He saved me on that disastrous night. And that person was the doctor, whose name I was clueless about. Reno's uncle.2

I should have known him through his perfume. That man who had rescued me used the same perfume as the doctor. How stupid I was not to recognize him earlier. Last night's robbery ushered me to finally expose my hero.

His hoodie was still in my grip. The clock on the wall chimed eight times that automatically jolted me back. Rethinking about the consequences I risked skipping school, I made up my mind to go to school. Besides, the doctor asked my address and told me a minute before his leaving that his assistant would visit and informed my mother my situation. So there was nothing I worried about. I had been a half-hour late. I could not miss more classes to pass this semester. Hanging the jacket back to its place and locking the closet, I scooted out with my shoes dangling in my hand.

The house was spacious; I did not know where to get to the exit door. I guessed I was in the living room yet no sign to get to another room. There were three doors which would of course direct me to different parts of this house. My heart guided me to go to the first door on the right side, with an alert, I pulled the handle down. Many kinds of flowers that beautified the patio were what my eyes firstly witnessed.

Taking mindful steps, I greeted someone in a dark shirt and pants that was standing next to the car with his back facing me. My voice brought him to turn around. His genial smile made him a wise friendly man. His face might look grim. But, he behaved kindly and politely toward me.

"I'll drive you home as doctor's instruction."

"Thanks. But, I’ve changed my mind. Could you just take me to the school?"

"Sure if that's what you want, Miss. Let's get in the car." He as soon as opened the door for me after speaking. Getting inside, I let myself sat comfortably in the car while enjoying the view along the way to school through the window.

It was only the latched gate that welcomed me upon arriving in front of the school. Beyond the fence, I could see no more students or teachers were walking around the front yard but the security guards who were on duty.

The driver who had sent me here had left. I knocked on the iron threshold, trying to get a notice from one of them. On my fifth attempt, one of them moved toward me.

"I'm sorry Miss. But the rule is clear. Whoever arrives late is not allowed to get in," he elucidated.

"Please. I got a mishap. Few men robbed me on my way home last night and hit me that I was in an unconscious state. I am grateful that someone found me and carried me to his house. That's why I am late. Please let me in," I pleaded.

"Rule is rule, Miss. Your record showed you have exceeded the three times of tardiness. We can tolerate it no more," he proclaimed.

"Please give me one more chance. I'll have a test today. If I don't make it this time, my two years of studying will be useless. The worst, it impacted my performance. I would be still in the same grade next coming year," I defended.

"We can't help you. Sorry," he said eventually and got back to his shelter

"Let her in." Someone interrupted from inside the gate. The entrance was taller than my body so that I barely took a glance at him. Nevertheless, his voice was familiar in my ear.

Hearing that order, that stocky security guard unlocked the gate. I slid through it. I did not surprise that Kevin had been there as if supervising me with his inspecting gaze. It was only him having a power to do so. Under his surveillance, I felt intimidated.

"You should thank him," that security guard articulated his words in a low voice.

"Hi! Ilana. How long has it been, "late" become your habit?" he mocked me.

Instead of debating on the small thing with Kevin, I ran toward the right building. The first class might have been over. Yet, I had other classes I had to attend. If I could achieve good marks in those classes, I might be safe this semester. It only needed one year to finally complete my study here which meant I would not encounter Angeline and her gangs.

"You did not answer my query?" Kevin was shockingly walking beside me.

"Are you stalking me?"

"Do you think I have more free time to tail you? My class was on the same floor as yours." He preceded me to enter the lift. I chose to walk up the stairs. "Are you sure you won't take the lift after an hour late?"

"Mind your own business,” I advised him.

"Well, that's your choice." The door swiped closed.

I hurried to get to my classroom. A teacher was explaining the lesson when I appeared at the door. That frigid teacher smiled wryly at me. Facing the floor, I stepped. She paused her explanation of the lesson. I explained him the detail reason of my lateness. I did not mention the part that I was taken to that doctor’s house, of course. It would drive many speculations. And nobody showed me their sympathy after harking to my story.

"Okay. You may join us." She decided. I felt at ease listening to her decision.

Struggling in many classes, I had to start learning from the basics. I spent reading many literature and references in the library during break time or after school. Vera was always ready to help whenever I came across difficulties. She was a friend in need, indeed.

Reading and studying a lot consumed my energy. With my tired body, I walked out of the school. Vera excused leaving earlier because she had something to do. I was passing the school gate. There were only two or three students near the gate waiting for taxi. A car, different car which carried me this morning stopped. The window was rolled down.

"Doctor..." I whispered. He was my hero. However, it was still a little bit unusual that he was here. What for?
